Lenny Lane (aka Lino Lenny) Biography
I specialise in linocut printmaking by hand and have been a practicing printmaker since graduating from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design over 30 years ago.
Hand printing is the cornerstone of my work – editions are not always identically perfect between prints – allowing a degree of exclusiveness to each print made, but at the same time allowing me to control quality throughout my editions when made by hand.
It’s a deeply satisfying practice and I’ve built a personal relationship with linocut printmaking over many years, and it’s my hope that this passion translates through the quality of my prints.
The amount of time and effort put into each print can depend on the volume of each edition. If it’s a small print I may do a large edition, and conversely larger prints, or a set of similar prints, are made or part of a smaller edition (usually no more that 10 unique prints).
Quality printing requires patience and a meticulous standard of attention to detail.
As for what influences my work, I returned to Scotland in 2018 after some years living in Canada and since then I have rediscovered an attachment to everything that is great about living here.
I continue my fondness for trees, old cottages, weather and seasons and how it all influences and marks their place in the environment.
I travel widely in search of identities from the Highlands and Islands, all unique and all playing a distinctive role in how I shape my ideas and drawings. I love the play of light and pushing the norms of colour. I’m intrigued with the idea of living remotely and independently and aim to show these qualities, even subliminally, in my prints.
I use a hint of the ethereal in the titles of my work, since my prints are largely borne from memories and times of places visited or imagined.
I am passionate about printmaking as a form of creative expression ,and from time to time, offer teaching opportunities to new and experienced artists and non-artists alike.
